Can CBD treat asthma?

What is asthma?

A specific definition tells us what asthma is. Asthma is an inflammatory chronic disease of the respiratory tract, most often bronchitis. It is characterized by increased reactivity to several stimuli leading to bronchial and variable obstructions, namely to narrowing up to closure of the bronchial lumen. These are reversible under the influence of therapy or spontaneously. Airway narrowing occurs mostly at the level of the bronchial branching in the lungs. This is experienced by the patient as difficulty breathing (especially when exhaling). Worldwide, more than 350 million people suffer from this unpleasant health disorder. The rise in the disease is also evidenced by the fact that not even half of the cases were diagnosed more than thirty years ago.

Asthma attack

The Greeks knew what asthma was centuries ago. The name of this disease comes from this language from the word asthma, which means “gasping for breath”. In the past, asthma and shortness of breath (dyspnoea) have become obsolete in our country. Diagnosis is based on a pattern of symptoms, spirometry, and response to treatment over time. It is also important for patients to explain what an asthma attack is. It arises as a result of increased reactivity of the human airways to stimuli such as bacteria, exertion, emotions, viruses, allergens, drugs or cold. These do not usually cause any similar reactions in a healthy person. An asthma attack occurs when non-immunological and immunological mechanisms trigger an inflammatory process with the accumulation of cells of various types in the bronchi (mucous membranes).

The CBD fights asthma with four main weapons. It prevents immune cells from invading other cells, relieves inflammation in the throat, alleviates side effects of asthma (such as anxiety or insomnia) and can relax tense muscles in the chest. CBD in asthma meets the basic conditions for proper treatment. This is because patients should take anti-inflammatory drugs, which is one of the main effects of cannabidiol. CBD targets several Th2 cytokines that cause allergic reactions. These include IL-17, IL-12, IL-6, IFN-c, TNF-a or IL-2. The anti-inflammatory effects of CBD thus act on multiple levels of inflammatory responses, thereby increasing the effectiveness of treatment and not focusing on just one specific inflammation.

Causes of asthma

This disease occurs because of a combination of not entirely well-defined genetic and environmental contexts. All this affects the body’s ability to fight disease, respond positively to treatment or the severity of the disease. A very important cause of asthma are also time-varying hereditary factors unrelated to DNA sequencing (epigenetic) and especially negative changes in the environment. Most patients have a genetic predisposition of the airway mucosa to react with inflammation to otherwise non-threatening triggers. The trigger for asthma is also atopy, which causes increased production of IgE antibodies upon contact with the allergen. We call this asthma “extrinsic asthma”. The one that appears in non-allergic people (especially in older age) is called “intrinsic asthma”. The most common symptoms of asthma are coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, difficulty breathing or wheezing in the chest.

Factors that can cause asthma are divided into environmental and genetic. Environmental causes of asthma include, for example, air pollution, allergens or various chemicals in the environment. Staying in smoky areas can also be a problem. More severe disease progression is also caused by air polluted by traffic or high levels of ozone. For children, beware of exposure to formaldehyde or phthalates (in PVC) or higher levels of endotoxin. A major problem is the occurrence of allergens in the home. Cockroaches, dust mites, mould, fur or animal skin can cause discomfort. However, a by-product of chlorinated swimming pool water can also be a trigger (e.g. trichloramine, which causes coughing, breathing problems or acute conjunctival irritation associated with tearing).

Generic factors are mainly based on family history. If asthma affects one of the identical twins, the probability for the other is at 25%. There are currently more than 100 genes indicated with asthma and the number is increasing every year. Many of these only trigger asthma in combination with certain negative environmental factors, which does not give me much optimism for the future.

Shortness of breath

Shortness of breath is an extremely widespread subjective symptom of several diseases. Patients describe it as labored or difficult breathing, or even a feeling of shortness of breath. People experience a choking sensation when they feel it. But the symptoms of shortness of breath are several. The main symptom is the feeling of not being able to breathe. Sometimes there is also a faster breathing rate, blue lips or nails, wheezing, excessive sweating or grey or pale skin. Certain symptoms can also indicate extremely serious problems such as a heart attack, angina or lack of oxygen. Shortness of breath very often occurs with asthma. Neither do these difficulties circumvent children. The specific diagnosis is determined by the doctor according to the duration of symptoms or medical history, the cause of the breathing difficulties is also extremely important.

Difficulty breathing symptoms

An unpleasant problem is ARDS. The symptoms of respiratory distress are fatigue, general deterioration of health and especially labored breathing. This syndrome is described as a sudden damage to the lungs. It can be triggered by infections, inhalation of irritants, accidents or asthma. But shortness of breath can only be a subjective feeling. It is a kind of psychological breathlessness or mental breathlessness. Its trigger is usually stress or psychological stress. The other side consists of severe respiratory disorders, in which the representation of blood gases also changes. In severe cases, orthopnea with rest dyspnea begins to manifest itself. There is also shortness of breath when talking or lying down. So, in general, we are talking about shortness of breath during low exertion.

Bronchitic wheezing occurs in the infectious disease of acute bronchitis, in which inflammation attacks the lower airways. Up to 90% of cases involve infections of the bronchi by various viruses. Shortness of breath is one of the symptoms in this disease, along with a hacking cough (dry at first, followed by mucus production), runny nose, headache and sore throat, increased temperature, noises when breathing or whistling sounds.

For asthma breathlessness, preparations containing CBD can help relieve lung pain. This substance reduces the pressure in the lungs and muscle spasticity, and thus relieves the pain caused by the interruption of normal airflow and the consequent muscle tension on the Sternocleidomastoid and Scalenus. CBD oil is the most popular for asthma.

Coughing

One of the most common symptoms is coughing. This is a loud and abrupt expulsion of air. In this way, our body creates a defensive reflex action to free the airways of saliva, mucus or other foreign bodies that irritate and block them. This is caused by mechanical or chemical irritations of the receptors on the mucous membrane.

A dry cough is also called a non-productive cough, and no mucus is coughed up. The patient feels a constant urge to cough. The main problem for the patient is the disturbance of sleep, exhaustion and the limitation of otherwise normal activities and functioning. It tends to worsen in warm and dry environments. Especially in adults, its most common cause is asthma; it can also occur in relation to allergies or heart problems. The classic cause behind a dry cough is upper respiratory tract inflammation or viral infection. A dry cough can last for weeks. A prolonged dry irritating cough can cause throat irritation. A child’s dry cough appears mainly at night. If it is not asthma, it can be triggered by a cold, cold air or allergies. CBD cough oil is also an excellent choice in this case.

A cough accompanied by mucus is also called a bronchial cough. It is precisely associated with its expectoration, which is the body’s defense mechanism to get rid of the mucus and relax the airways. If a gelatinous, light, clear mucus appears, it should not be a more serious problem. It is especially formed in the case of a properly caught flu or late-stage rhinitis. However, beware of a purulent or greenish form together with a cough, for example, without a cold. In this case, it may be a symptom of bronchitis and lower respiratory tract inflammation. Be alert for difficulty breathing, shortness of breath or coughing accompanied by blood (bloody sputum).

Irritable cough and other forms of cough are usually treated with preparations that have the ability to suppress the cough reflex. Home remedies for coughs are also popular. CBD cough oil is also an excellent choice in this case.

Coughing up of thick mucus

Although people are prejudiced against mucus, it normally has protective functions. However, if its formation increases, it can lead to various diseases. Coughing with mucus is associated with coughing it up. The mucus itself can be white, gray, yellow or green in color. Admixtures of blood are problematic. A hacking cough is to get sputum out of the airways. This is a defensive reflex mechanism that does not occur in irritant dry cough. The overproduction of mucus is caused by viruses and upper respiratory tract diseases. It is also caused by fever or a runny nose. These infections can be caused by influenza as well, where the infection is a result of an RNA virus. A wet cough also occurs during sinusitis. We can mention bronchitis among diseases of the lower respiratory tract With chronic inflammation, it is a long-term problem that tends to return. The triggers are a polluted environment, negative work environment or smoking. Chronic bronchitis is associated with a morning and prolonged cough with mucus or even blood. A wet cough also occurs in asthma. Coughing from phlegm without a cold is often caused by bad air.

We can also determine the cause of the disease by the color of the mucus. With white and transparent it is a viral infection. Yellow is evidence of a purulent inflammation and bacterial infections, also indicative of green (chronic inflammation, resistant bacterial strains.) In a frothy and pink form, there may be heart failure or pulmonary edema. Red is attributed to haemoptysis (minor bleeding, for example in TB or tumours) and hemoptosis (bleeding from a larger blood vessel). Light yellow defines the healing phase in pneumonia, black and blackish grey occurs when there is a lot of air pollution, for example in coal mines or dust.

Chest pain

Unpleasant asthma symptoms include chest pain. However, it can also indicate a problem with the cardiovascular system, spine or respiratory system. It can manifest itself as pain in the left breast, pain in the right breast or, for example, pain in the female breast. Pain in the chest and pain in the back at the same time is also common. It can be an acute or chronic manifestation. The pain is characterized as a tightness, pressure in the center of the chest, a feeling of heaviness in the chest (as if someone is sitting on it), chest tightness, stinging, burning or discomfort. Associated symptoms are restlessness, anxiety, fear, palpitations, shortness of breath, sweating, wakefulness, vomiting, coughing, heartburn and weight loss.

Pain under or in the left breast can be acute (myocardial infarction, superficial tissue injury) or chronic (pericardial disease). The cause is usually chronic pericarditis, possibly severe rhinitis, asthma, angina pectoris or chest muscle congestion. Chest pain on the right is a frequent symptom of diseases of neuromusculoskeletal origin. It is also caused by mechanical overload, an overestimation of physical strength or unnatural rotation of the torso. If underestimated, this can lead to the very painful inflammation of the muscle tissue. In women, pain in the breasts is also common.

Chest pain when breathing can be caused by pleurisy (accompanied by coughing, joint and muscle pain or increased temperature), fractures after accidents, infection (pneumonia), collapsed lungs (pain caused when breathing in, pneumothorax), tumour or pulmonary embolism (sweating, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, fever).

Asthmatic wheezing

Wheezing when breathing can signal a number of health problems besides asthma. This is an increased thickness of the chest wall, the presence of fluid or air in or around the lungs, inadequate airflow into one part of the lungs or, conversely, excessive inspiration into it. Murmurs, grunts or wheezes may also be added. Specifically in asthma, the wheezing of the lungs when exhaling is called an expiratory stridor. The inspiratory stidor is a wheezing of the opposite character (inhalation). It is caused by obstruction in the larynx, for example, by swelling and inflammation of the larynx or the aspiration of a foreign body. Stidor can also be mixed.

Heavy breathing

In an asthmatic person, breathing difficulties are caused by poorer air passage through the bronchi. This occurs in prolonged or recurrent inflammatory processes, when they overreact to stimuli in which the organism of a healthy person remains calm. This will cause a worsening of breathing by the aforementioned bronchoconstriction and an unpleasant asthma attack. Difficulty in exhaling or inhaling may evoke a common illness, but when associated with a dry cough, probably asthma.

This chronic respiratory disease associated with breathing difficulties can also be treated by CBD. Cannabidiol works similarly to bronchidilatants, i.e. it is able to dilate the airways. During an asthma attack, the bronchial tubes become constricted and the oxygen supply is reduced, which is what CBD solves.

Types of asthma

Experts have identified several types of asthma. One division is persistent asthma (permanent) and intermittent asthma (sometimes the patient experiences no problems, other times the conditions become extremely severe). Bronchial asthma is a non-infectious chronic inflammation of the bronchial lining, which is manifested by coughing and shortness of breath. It is caused by an incorrect immune reaction of the body, which leads to the swelling of the bronchial mucosa and narrowing of the bronchial wall. Problems arise especially during exhalation, which is also accompanied by whistling sounds.

Allergic asthma

Allergic asthma only confirms the claims that allergies and asthma get along very well. It is in asthmatics that various allergic manifestations occur. The most common symptoms of bronchial asthma are associated with hay fever, where the patient suffers from a stuffy nose, wheezing, watery eyes and itchy nose. Occasionally, eczema also appears. It is the most common type of asthma, caused by allergens such as dust mites, pollen grains, animal hair and skin, food, insect venom or airborne mold.

Obstructive lung disease

Obstructive lung disease is a disease that is built on the narrowing of the airways. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a persistent inflammation and obstruction of the airways. Emphysema of the lungs also occurs if the alveoli are damaged or completely destroyed due to inflammatory processes. As a result, the patient is unable to exhale efficiently and an excessive amount of residual air remains in the lungs after inhalation. Symptoms usually appear only when more severe damage to the lung tissue occurs. The most common symptoms include coughing.

Cardiac asthma

Cardiac asthma is an extremely severe attack of shortness of breath that occurs mainly at night. It appears in more severe left ventricular heart failure. Blood begins to accumulate in the lungs, which the left ventricle fails to pump into the body’s circulation. Shortness of breath is especially strong when lying down and is felt by the patient after several hours of sleep. One wakes up with a feeling of lack of air and distress. In the worse stages, cardinal pulmonary edema can also occur.

Pneumoconiosis

Pneumoconiosis can develop with prolonged inhalation of air containing inorganic particles. The latter causes negative changes in respiration, a result of immunocompetent cells reacting to inorganic particles. Thus damage to the interstitium of the lungs occurs. Pneumoconiosis is manifested by frequent coughing and choking. To prevent it, it is important to use protective equipment in dusty environments. Of course, asthmatics should avoid these areas.

Asthma treatment

To treat asthma, it is important to know the type of asthma and preferably the trigger. Therapy of bronchial asthma is based on the administration of anti-inflammatory drugs (inhaled corticosteroids, antileukotrienes). However, these are not effective just before physical exertion. In this case, CBD oil for asthma can help. Cannabidiol also has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, which is useful in the treatment of bronchial asthma. This substance interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the body, which can trigger homeostasis. CBD can be a great complement to natural asthma treatment.

CBD drops for asthma, thanks to their anti-inflammatory effects, achieve dilation of the bronchi and reduce their swelling, allowing them to relax and allow sufficient airflow. Analgesic effects are also helpful. CBD is the equivalent of a 2-AG endocannabinoid that induces or reduces the sensation of pain. Relaxing the muscles is also a great help, as asthmatics suffer from unnatural tightness of airway tissue. In addition, this substance suppresses the hyperactivity of the immune system and prevents the excessive production of inflammatory substances in the body. In addition to all this, it is also used to suppress several of the accompanying phenomena of asthma such as depression, anxiety, mood disorders and insomnia.

Side effects

Products with CBD have very few proven side effects, the most of them are only minor. These may include:

  • dry mouth
  • low blood pressure
  • light headedness
  • drowsiness
