CBD and pets

What Is CBD Oil?

Cannabis plants contain more than 100 active compounds, but the one most often used for medicinal purposes is cannabidiol, or CBD. However, there is this important difference, in that CBD differs from cannabis’s major active compound, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Sorry guys, it simply does not have a psychoactive affect, meaning it will not get users “high.” Yep. The good news is, however, that CBD oils contain a high concentration of CBD and can be used for therapeutic purposes.
To sum it up briefly, CBD oil interacts with the human body through our endocannabinoid system, the ECS for short. Cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, work with our ECS to give us many of the health benefits associated with cannabis.

And what’s that got to do with your pets?
Well, fortunately enough, our ECS is very similar to our pet’s ECS. Thus, the health benefits you receive from a daily dose of CBD can also be beneficial to your four-legged friend!

One For The Dogs

CBD oil can be helpful for your dog’s daily living in numerous ways. First, it does pretty much the same thing as it does to humans: it may promote a sense of calmness and relaxation, support healthy joints and bones, and may even relieve stiffness that is associated with everyday activity and exercise.

Also, many paw parents are looking to give their dog CBD to promote relaxation, especially during stressful situations like fireworks, car rides, or thunderstorms. However, here is the million dollaar question:

How Much CBD Do I Give My Dog?

Choosing the proper dose of CBD for your dog can be tricky. There are so many CBD products, ranging from CBD oil for dogs to CBD treats for dogs, so deciding on a dose or accurate dose can be confusing. However, once you’re rehearsed in the factors involved, an appropriate CBD dosage will be much easier to navigate.
Some dogs may react differently than others and the amount of hemp CBD oil you give your pooch depends on their ailment and their body weight.
A good formula we recommend pet parents to use when deciding a CBD dose for your dog is very simple, though: It’s 0.5 mg of CBD per body weight of your dog. For instance, if your dog weighs 5 kgs, maybe start them at a CBD dosage of 2.5 mg.
Another important factor to consider when searching for the appropriate dosage is the age of your dog. For example, a younger dog may not be as affected by a CBD dose compared to an older, full-grown one. This means younger pups may need a higher dose to reap the desired effects from the hemp oil.

Purr some CBD

With the ability to provide natural relief for numerous conditions, CBD can improve your cat’s overall quality of life and keep them healthier longer.
While research is still ongoing, we may state with a high degree of certainty, your cat can and will benefit from it. Here are a few examples.

Arthritis treatment

According to a 2011 study, 61% of cats six years or older have arthritis in at least one joint and 82% of cats 14 years or older suffer from arthritis. This can lead to decreased mobility, constant pain, lack of energy, and all sorts of other symptoms that can make life unpleasant.
While age is inevitable, CBD can help improve the situation.
CBD is packed with powerful anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce inflammation, while mitigating the spread of further inflammation. In addition, researchers have found that CBD can decrease the perceived level of pain by activating and desensitizing the brain’s vanilloid receptor.

CBD can also help ease stress. Common stressors for cats include changes to their environment, conflicts with other cats, poor human-cat relationships, and health problems or irregularities and they can lead do declining health.

Other Positive Effects (Before the Punchline)

Low levels of energy, unbalanced hormones, or other deeper issues can lead to your cat being grumpy. By alleviating issues that are possibly at the root of the issue, such as health issues, stress, and anxiety, CBD can help improve your cat’s mood-related disorders.
In addition, CBD can work synergistically to maintain homeostasis in the body by interacting with receptors in the brain responsible for regulating mood levels and moderating hormone production. And that’s before we come to the punchline.

The Punchline: CBD May Help Reduce Epileptic Seizures for Cats

Like humans, cats can, unfortunately, suffer from epilepsy and experience seizures at varying levels of severity and frequencies. Seizures occur when there is an abnormal level of electrochemical activity in the brain and are typically caused by brain damage or other brain conditions.

While there is still much research to be done regarding CBD for the treatment of epileptic seizures in felines, there has been an increasing number of studies on the subject with very promising results.
One of the most well-known studies is a 2015 study by the American Epilepsy Society, in which the researchers confirmed that CBD was effective in reducing both the frequency and severity of seizures, with a median reduction rate of 45.1%.
As researchers continue to learn more about this amazing hemp-derived cannabinoid, hopefully, we will uncover more ways CBD can benefit our pets.
